Greg Carty-Hornsby

About me

Greg’s patent work focusses on mechanical technologies across a range of industries including automotive, power tool, manufacturing, food and beverage, medical device, and printing. He has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK and Europe, as well as co-ordinating prosecution abroad. Greg often works on contentious matters, and has experience in UKIPO revocation proceedings, as well as in oppositions before the EPO. In one notable case, Greg handled a complex opposition-appeal and intervention matter before the EPO involving co-ordination with co-pending infringement litigation. Greg is frequently involved in clearance work for many of his clients, advising on matters of infringement and validity across a range of jurisdictions. Greg recently spent 5 months on secondment to our Hong Kong office, in which he was heavily involved in patent prosecution and clearance work for a leading power tool manufacturer.

Aside from his patent work, Greg is also a specialist in industrial designs. He has extensive experience filing UK and EU registered design applications as well as co-ordinating prosecution abroad. Greg advises his clients on how to get the most out of their design filing strategy, and is well-practiced in using design protection to complement co-pending patent prosecution. Greg regularly advises on matters of infringement and validity of both registered and unregistered design rights. Greg has experience in contentious design matters, including the preparing cease and desist letters and product take-down requests for online marketplaces. Greg has further expertise in the changes to industrial designs brought about by Brexit.

Greg joined Marks & Clerk in 2014 having graduated with a first class MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Birmingham, where his research focused on fluid mechanics of blood flow. He won the City of Birmingham Silver Jubilee Award in 2013 and was awarded the Frederick Barnes Waldron prize by the IMechE in 2014. Greg has previous work experience at an engineering consultancy, through his gap year and vacation placements.
