Earlier this month, Marks & Clerk launched it's fourth AI Report. As ever, the report uses EPO data to identify global trends in AI patent applications and provide analysis from our team of world-leading AI specialists. This year, the team took a deep dive into the impact of AI on the race to Net Zero.
In this short video, Mike Williams, AI Report Author and lead partner in AI at Marks & Clerk, discusses the aspects of the report that stand out most to him including how Europe is a key, regional driver of growth within green patent filing, as well as the role of Marks & Clerk in helping to accelerate the energy transition.
Some points to listen out for include:
- Growth in overall AI applications is slowing, however growth of green AI applications is actually accelerating and was at 35% in 2023.
- The U. S. is the source of the majority of AI patent applications at the EPO, despite the EPO being the home market of European companies. However, European countries are the biggest source of green AI patents applications.
- Different economic areas seem to have different technological focuses when it comes to using AI to solve some of the big climate problems we face. European countries seem to be focusing very heavily on energy conservation technology i.e. how they can use AI to conserve energy.
- The U. S. is leaning more heavily towards climate change adaptation technologies, whereas both China and Japan have quite a strong focus on sustainable transportation. Both Japan and China have big automotive industries, and China has a very large battery industry.
- Marks and Clerk is leading the way when it comes to AI patent applications. The firm is one of the leading filers of green AI patent applications and in core AI technologies, we are also the leading filer with a success rate over 32% greater than the average for that technology area.
