I am a chemist, which makes this week a wonderful week – it is Chemistry Week! The annual celebration, pioneered by the Royal Society of Chemistry, aims to raise an awareness of the role chemistry has in our daily lives. From medicines to batteries, materials to detergents, the list goes on and on…where would we be without chemistry? The week is aimed at school-aged children and this year encourages teachers to get pupils thinking about how chemistry is shaping the future.
As a chemist turned patent attorney, I use my chemistry on a daily basis at work, despite no longer working in a laboratory. A background in chemistry opens the doors to so many different careers, and if a celebration such as this one can spark the curiosity of just a few future chemists then I fully support it!
