There is no doubt that MedTech is one of the most innovative and fertile areas of technology, and attracts more European patent applications than any other area. The UK is a hotbed of research, with around 60 different research programmes in 2021 supporting innovative technologies, representing over £1 billion of funding.
However, there are real challenges in getting MedTech innovations to the patient. Therefore, it is great to hear of the launch of the UK's first ever MedTech Strategy, focused on accelerating access to innovative technologies.
From my own experience, many of the inventions that cross my desk are focused on bringing care closer to the patient, with an explosion in the use of AI, increasing use of wearables, novel diagnostic methods and many inventions focused on non-clinical settings. The UK's strategy is a big step forward in speeding-up access to such novel technologies.
