M&C in the news: Intellectual Property Office Innovation and Growth Report 2023/24

Earlier this week, Richard Gibbs, Partner at Marks & Clerk, was quoted in Law360, emphasising the pivotal role of the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) in supporting applicants and safeguarding intellectual property rights, following the release of their 2023/24 Innovation and Growth Report.

“The recent surge in applications before the UKIPO, coupled with applicant-driven demand for robust and easy-to-use online procedures, should continue to drive the UKIPO’s ambition to improve and modernize. The support offered by the UKIPO to applicants of all types should not be underestimated,” says Richard.

This is a critical development for businesses across all sectors of the UK economy. A greater awareness of the damaging effects of IP infringement is essential, and the UKIPO's proactive steps in this regard are encouraging.

At Marks & Clerk, we’re proud to support innovators and entrepreneurs navigating the ever-changing landscape of IP protection.

Indeed, applicants are already beginning to feel the impact of more cost-effective filing and prosecution processes, according to Richard Gibbs, partner at Marks & Clerk LLP. He also said that the office's audit grants — which have amounted to nearly £1 million ($1.3million) in total with its partnerships, going to 389 businesses — have had a "hugely positive impact" on startups.
