Future system operator to be launched to oversee UK energy system

The UK government has approved the launch of the Future System Operator (FSO) to oversee the UK energy system. While investing in renewable energy sources and new fuels such as hydrogen is important, ensuring the broader electrical grid can handle such changes while still working with traditional energy sources is also vital. Question marks may still remain over the surrounding legislation which will allow the FSO to achieve its stated goals, but the news that the government is considering this problem is positive, and a step in the right direction.

The Future System Operator (FSO), to be launched once legislation is passed and timelines have been discussed with key parties, will look at the Great Britain’s energy system as a whole, integrating existing networks with emerging technologies such as hydrogen
